Chapter Twenty-two

“So, did you know that fire monster from last night?”

Smiling at the sound of the muse’s voice, Gavin turned around in the dream water. He’d been thinking about her all day, despite the eight-hour rehearsal, a phone conference with the band’s producer, and a stop at the pub for beers with his mates on his way home for the night.

“No.” Maybe. Yes.

Ocean blue reflected off the muse’s eyes, and her long, slick hair stuck to tanned shoulders. She wore a thin-strapped top that showed off her breasts. Her nipples tightened just above the cold water.

Shit. Staring again.

He licked his lips.

Pelted by constant thoughts of her during the day, Gavin had considered going to Urangan Harbour to find the muse, but he’d promptly tossed that idea out. No way he could get involved with her in Realis. It wasn’t safe. Bad enough Scarlet had seen them together here in the Dreaming. If she sussed out that he and the muse were anything more than acquaintances…

No way.

With a quick headshake, he woke up his Dreamsense and sent it on a Fyre hunt. It found only Water. Good.

The muse swam close, stopped within reach, and slid her foot up his leg.

Shit.

He opened his arms and welcomed her with a full-body hug. Melting into his embrace, she grinned up at him. He’d never cared much for physical possessions, never been territorial about a person other than Serena, but if anything or anyone ever threatened his muse, he’d kill to protect her. In the Dreaming or Realis.

He reached behind her and scooped up a length of her hair in one hand. Its wet silk fell between his fingers. Her heart thumped against his chest, vibrating through skin and bone and sinew. He forgot himself for a moment.

As her leg grazed his under the water again, she held his gaze. Lavender perfume filled his nose, and the seductive call rose from some hidden place inside her. Desire fanned from her eyes, crept through the Water between them.

He shook his head and pulled away to get his attention back online. He opened his mouth to ask about the whale she’d mentioned before, but she cut him off, wrapping both legs around his, arms tight around his shoulders, nipples pressing into his chest.

His cock replied in kind. The defiant bastard.

One eyebrow arched, she grinned. “You must know something about the creature that attacked me.”

The hairs on his legs rose against the smooth skin on her shins. He cleared his throat, twisting his hips away to keep from poking her. “Uh, it was a Fyre Elemental—a physical incarnation of fire that takes human or animal shape. But you don’t need to worry about that. It’s just a dream.” More lies. He cringed inwardly.

She uh-huh-ed through the kisses she dropped along his collarbone and shoulder. He shuddered. Red rippled his aura, tinting his arms and hands purple.

“Are you listening to me, Muse?” He tried to control his simmering lust, but the quiver in his voice gave him up.

Her glazed eyes focused on his mouth, and she licked her lips.
